A Week To Remember!
Sal and Budi advised me very well with a choice of itineraries and Yulius and Lia were the best guides. Once he knew my interests, Yulius planned three varied and interesting days and took me to a number of villages and burial sites round Rantepao; as well as attending a funeral, we visited a village where preparations were being made for another, and I was able to see craftsmen preparing the bier, with fascinating carving and painted detail.
The sad events of the earthquake and tsunami in northern Sulawesi may make potential visitors hesitant to book a holiday on the island but Tana Toraja was not affected; indeed the region needs its foreign visitors so if you are planning to go there, don’t delay. In addition to its cultural wealth, the region is exceptionally beautiful; probably not a place to take very young children but fascinating for everyone else. For those who are travelling through the Indonesian archipelago, this region is not to be missed.
