How the pandemic devastated Indonesian tourism.

For almost two years, overseas tourism was obliterated thanks to the global lockdowns. Our guides, cooks and staff looked for jobs in other sectors but there was barely work. Instead they sold possessions, burned their little savings, and lived from donations. Our Torajan guide Budi even lived in a primary forest for a while - and hunted for his food - to avoid the virus. Read more about How Covid-19 Devastated Indonesians in Tourism.

Whenever you visit Indonesia, please take notice that your tips will have more meaning than they have ever had. It is not only a symbolic sign of appreciation, it will make a real and big difference to the lifes of your guides and their families.

Your visit to Indonesia brings anyhow a lot of joy to our lifes again. Not just because of the financial perspectives, but mostly because we can finally do what we love most: Show you our jungles and cultures and create lifetime memories together.

Rantepao – Funeral Ceremony – Batutumonga – Kambira – Kete Kesu – Salu – Bugis Village – Rammang Rammang – Lake Tempe – Bira Beach

Note: You find the default itineraries on the tabs above the image slider. Because the tours are private, the itineraries are flexible and can be adjusted to your wishes and flight schedule.

The must-do in this area is a 2D Toraja Tour to see the burial sites South from Rantepao – such as Kambira, Kete Kesu and Tampang Allo – and to see the beautiful landscape and hills in the North (around Batutumonga) while trekking through the rice fields and mountain villages.

Tau Tau Suaya

While Tana Toraja is famous for its funeral ceremonies, many overlook that the area is among the most beautiful trekking scenes in Indonesia. Unfortunately, most guides are mostly familiar with the popular burial sites and less with the hidden trails in the mountains.

Local Guides works with licensed trekking guides. We bring you to breath taking landscapes away from the crowd. Because of our agreements with several village chiefs, our clients have the unique possibility to spend the nights in local houses during our mountain treks.

KataKaruya

Therefore, we recommend to do at least a 3D Toraja Tour & Village Stay Tour in order to go off-the-beaten-path during an all-day hike through rice fields, cacao- and coffee plantations, bamboo forests and the many villages, and stay overnight in the cute, remote village Salu.

The favorite tour among hikers that love off-the-beaten trails, is our 5D Toraja & Village Stay Tour.

Batutumonga

The Tana Toraja Tours can be perfectly combined with visits to Rammang Rammang, Lake Tempe and Bira Beach. The 6D Sulawesi Tour is a favourite among travellers that arrive and leave from Makassar because this tour breaks the long journey from Makassar to Rantepao and back and is an excellent value for money.

Reading Tip:
The Ultimate Guide to Tana Toraja

Experienced, Local Guides

We want travellers to experience the natural and cultural treasures of beauty of some of Earth’s remote places. Therefore, only licensed guides with a proven track record of satisfied clients can join our network.

Our team in Tana Toraja consists of licensed trekking guides, born and raised around Rantepao. We follow strict safety- and environmental rules to minimise the human footprint to the local environment.

Prepare for your Tana Toraja Tour

For a good preparation of your Tana Toraja Tour, we recommend reading the The Ultimate Guide to Tana Toraja.

How to get to Rantepao

Makassar is the gateway to Tana Toraja, and Rantepao is the base from which to explore Tana Toraja.

Fly to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar. From here you can reach Rantepao both via land and by air.

By Air. Take the morning flight from Makassar to Palopo Bua Airport (±1 hour), located ±2 hour drive from Rantepao. Use SkyScanner to search for international and domestic flights.

Warning: While Rantepao also has a small airport “Pongtiku”, we advice against flying there, as occasionally flights are either delayed or canceled.

Taxi. Take a private transfer from the airport to Rantepao (±8/9 hours). You could make stops at interesting sites on route (Bugis village, Erotic mountains), make a detour to visit Rammang Rammang, or break the journey with an overnight at Sengkang.

Bus. The cheapest option is to take the bus (±9/10 hours). There are several bus companies with different prices and each bus has different seat classes. Always take the most luxury seats as these much more comfortable for a little higher price. Bus companies include Litha & Co, Manggala Trans and Primadona. Usually you need to buy the bus tickets locally, but Primadona has a (primitive) online booking system and an email address ([email protected]).

What to bring for the Tana Toraja Tour

The general pack list:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Insect repellent (DEET 40%)
  • Small backpack for the day trips
  • Camera

Pack also the following for the Tana Toraja treks:

  • Towel
  • Pocket light
  • Mobile charger for your electronic devices (or a spare battery)

In case you visit a ceremony, you could consider bringing ceremony gifts (e.g. sugar, chocolate, cigarettes) with you, or alternatively just ask your guide to make a stop at a store on the way to the ceremony.

Good to Know

Getting Here

Fly to Makassar and from here take either the private taxi or bus to Rantepao, or fly to Palopo airport where we can pick you up. You could use SkyScanner to search for international flights and NusaTrip for domestic flights.

Recommended Accommodations

Accommodation is not included (except in a Toraja village). Some recommended hotels:

Makassar Airport: Harper Perintis
Makassar: Citanes Royal Bay Makassar
Rantepao: Toraja Misilliana Hotel
Bira: Secret Guest Hause

Payment Process

A small online booking confirmation fee is required to confirm your booking request. The outstanding amount is usually paid in cash upon arrival. Alternatively - and only if you wish - the outstanding balance can be transferred in advance to our guide's Indonesian bank account.

In case you wish to pay the outstanding balance in advance, we recommend using TransferWise .

This is an increasingly popular payment platform among Western travellers for payments to non-Western countries, because international transfers via bank or PayPal usually assume unfavourable currency exchange rates on top of the commissions. Create a Transferwise account now - the confirmation process takes a few days - and ask for bank details.

Travel Insurance

We advice you to visit Indonesia with a good travel insurance. In case you do not have one yet, you may want to consider the international travel insurance World Nomads that many backpackers use.

Recommended Acccommodations

The included accommodation in Rantepao is at a local guesthouse with great value for money: Rosalina Guesthouse or alike.

Rantepao does not have any luxury accommodations, and in our opinion the more expensive accommodations are not good value for money. However, in case you prefer to stay at the more expensive accommodations instead of the included guesthouse, you can book your own accommodation and get a discount for your Toraja tour. Popular hotels in the top category are:
■ Toraja Misilliana Hotel

3D2N Jungle Trekking

This tour is for the true adventurer! The traveler that seeks to discover unexplored, and yet magnificent regions! The traveler that enjoys the outdoors, is curious about survival techniques, and is thrilled by the vibe of a remote, virgin, evergreen forest.

The trekking will be in the remote, evergreen rainforest in the Mambasa region, a few hours drive from Palopo airport and Rantepao village. Because Torajans are supersticious and fear the jungle, most Torajan guides have never been to the jungle and jungle trekking tours are not commonly offered around Toraja, despite the incredibly attractive circumstances.

Our aim is to show the rich diversity of flora and fauna in this beautiful, virgin jungle. The jungle provides many resources that people ignore nowadays such as traditional medicinal herbs. Animals living here include wild pigs, monkeys and various bird species including the Sulawesi hornbill.

Trekking, Hunting & Building Shelters

As we trek through the jungle, we will teach you about the medicinal plants, and show the wildlife. We will sleep in a tent or in hammocks and prepare simple meals in cooking equipment we bring with ourselves. Porters will carry your heavy bags and provide general support.

For the true adventurours we also offer the survival option where we will teach you how to hunt in the jungle, make a shelter from natural resources and eat what the jungle provides us (this includes smoking ant nests, drinking from plant roots, eating jungle fruit, frying frogs, etc).

We provide jungle trekkings from 2 up to 7 days. We recommend to do at least a 3 day tour to experience one full day in the jungle. You should be in good shape, comfortable with outdoor trekkings and very basic facilities.

Wana Tribe

This jungle is also home to the indigenous Wana tribe. This Nomadic tribe lives in the jungle in isolation from the civilized world, but they do warmly welcome the few visitors that show interest to visit them.

In case you do a jungle trekking of at least 5 or 6 days, we may be able to find them and pay them a visit. This is especially a unique opportunity for photographers and documentary makers, as there is very little public information available about this jungle tribe!
